Hickory Golf Restoration

One of the most frequently asked questions that one receives from Antique Golf Club Collectors is on the care and repair of Hickory golf clubs. Here we will discuss two forms of hickory golf restoration; the appropriate techniques for both straightening and for lengthening a Hickory shaft.

Many collectors have avoided a Vintage golf club if the hickory shaft has been warped more than an inch or so along its length. Even though the remainder of the club may be in good or even excellent condition, many die-hard collectors cannot overcome the effect of that imperfect shaft

If the club is in otherwise good condition, do not automatically give up on it; Heres what you need to do:

First, obtain a section of hollow metal tubing about 45 inches long that has an inner diameter just bigger than the shaft you wish to straighten.

Next, remove the grip from the club.

Using a hand-held gas blowtorch heat the hickory shaft. If the shaft has a local kink in it, heat it around that area. If the shaft is bowed over a longer section heat all of that section accordingly.

Youll need to pass the flame over the shaft at a moderate pace- too slow and you melt the varnish and burn the wood. To quick and youll not get enough heat into the wood- this is where practice on a less valued club is recommended You need to get the wood hot enough for it to bend easily. You should, of course, be wearing some safety goggles and some ( leather not rubber ) safety gloves. Once the shaft feels hot through the gloves apply some gentle pressure to it to straighten out the worst sections bending it over another separate block of wood works well. With the wood still hot ( reheat it if necessary ) place the shaft into the metal tube and leave it to cool naturally for at least 20 minutes.

When you remove the shaft, it will be straightened! Simply repeat the process as necessary. This is relatively simple and can really be done by anyone.

Golf Swing Impact and Follow Through

Following on from my last article, we are now on our way down in the golf swing and heading towards the collision at impact with the golf ball.nbsp; The position of your body at impact determines the ball?s flight, so it pays to your body angles right.

1nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; Shaft lean ?With iron shots the shaft should lean a little forward at this point, compressing the ball and adding power. With the driver, the club head and grip arrive as one, setting up more of a sweeping strike when making the golf swing.

2nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; Hips clear ? The shoulders should be fairly square and the left hip will be higher because the left leg is straighter. Place a club against your hips to see this for yourself and you will see that the angle of club on your hips, when turned through into the impact area of your golf swing is parallel to the angle of your shoulders.

3nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; Maintain Flex ? This is a very important position to form correctly. The hips have cleared open with the left leg straightened, but not locked.

Apply force ? This drill in your golf swing will enforce the feeling of a correct impact position and get you applying pressure in the right direction ? into the back of the ball with a downward blow.

Try this drill and you will a consistent effect on with your driving, and with your irons.

Follow through ? Many amateurs neglect the importance of the follow through in the belief that when the ball has been set on its way at impact, what is the relevance of how a follow through finishes up in the golf swing.

Well the answer to this is that it is just as important as the rest of your golf swing, because the way you have completed your golf swing is a good indication of how your down swing and impact will have looked like.

BALANCE in your follow through is the key to finding a stylish follow through that sees the ball sailing straight.

In your finish position, your chest should be fully rotated through to face the target. Make sure your weight is towards your left heel. The right foot will naturally be toes-down on the ground.

Finish as a unit ? Shoulder turn and arm swing continue as a unit to the end of the golf swing. If your body stops turning and your arms race ahead, you will see a lack of consistency in your ball striking

Target face ? The hips should also be facing the target in the finish if have cleared properly through impact.

A natural, rather than a forced finish is where your weight has shifted to the outside of your left foot, and your right foot is up on its toes with the sole facing vertically backwards and finally chest facing the target and the hands high above and slightly behind the left shoulder.
