You may think that golf carts are only used to travel around the course while golfing at the country club. However, these vehicles aren’t just for golfers anymore. They have recently become a popular and beloved mode of transportation for another group of people. Senior citizens love golf carts because their slow speeds make them a safe alternative to traditional cars. Some manufacturers have even begun to produce golf carts specifically tailored to the needs of senior citizens. These vehicles include additional safety features such as seat belts, turn signals, headlights, roll bars, and shatterproof windshields.
As golf carts have become more popular among senior citizens, another trend has also emerged: specialized retirement communities that are designed to be entirely cart-accessible. These communities typically feature extensive paths connecting various buildings, so that residents can travel from place to place. Generally, the speed limit within these communities is approximately 20 or 25 miles per hour.
The largest cart-accessible community is The Villages, located in Sumter County, Florida. The Villages is an over-55 retirement community with a population of more than 8,000 senior citizens. It has been ranked as the fastest-growing small town in the United States. This retirement community offers its residents many opportunities to go golfing and has numerous courses on its premises. This is most likely the reason why golf carts became such a popular mode of transportation within the community. The Villages even has specialized tunnels and bridges that allow its residents to drive out of the community without having to use major highways, which could be dangerous because of the vehicles’ slow speeds and lack of protection in the case of an accident.
Sun City Center, also located in Florida, is another cart-oriented retirement community. It is located near Tampa and has its own hospitals, shopping centers, movie theaters, and other health care and recreational facilities. It also has several swimming pools and many different clubs for nearly every interest or hobby. Sun City Center features wide streets lined with palm trees and special small parking spots for the convenience of its residents.
In some cases, entire towns have adopted these vehicles as their primary mode of transportation, such as the town of Peachtree City, Georgia. Peachtree City is a suburb of Atlanta and has a population of 34,000. This town features 90 miles of cart-accessible paths connecting schools, shopping centers, libraries, museums, movie theaters, health care facilities, residential neighborhoods, and all the other buildings that its citizens need to live their daily lives. The town also has rules and by-laws that govern the use of these vehicles. These rules are in place to promote and maintain the safety of Peachtree City’s residents.
